The Younger Lovers – Down Down Gently; The Ballad of Two Stubborn Men

Episode 89

younger lovers

The Younger Lovers is a Bay Area band that is carrying on with the tradition of being really good. The punk rock movement is alive and well in Northern California and The Younger Lovers can take a little slice of credit for that.

Melt-Banana – Candy Gun; Vertigo Game

melt-banana

In the early 1990’s, rising out of the neon concrete slab of Tokyo could be heard the acoustical assault that is Melt-Banana. Their new album “Fetch” continues the tradition; and the masses wept, some for joy, others for their impending doom.

ep86 Melt-Banana – Candy Gun; Vertigo Game

(oh, i neglected to mention their bassist, Rika Hamamoto, in the show- she is awesome, and cute)

ep084 Hookworms – Away/Towards

UK band Hookworms released their debut album in October and it is a mind-blowing/mind-numbing bastion of sonic bombardment. Psychedelic jams that build, reverberate, resonate then retreat and repeat.

The Intelligence – I Like LA

octintelligence
ep62 The Intelligence – I Like LA

Long time proto-punk new wavey LA rock and rollers The Intelligence had a strong showing in 2012 with their album “Everybody’s Got It Easy But Me”. Their long discography is definitely worth a spin, put “Fake Surfers” up high on that list.

Happy Jawbone Family Band – Book of Fire

HappyJawboneFamilyBand
ep57 Happy Jawbone Family Band – Book of Fire

Happy Jawbone Family Band is as quirky as their name implies, and if I’ve learned anything about creative people, I’ve learned that they absolutely adore the moniker “quirky”. HJFB is not quirky, they are good. It is music that evokes and emotes. It puts me in a place distinctly within my mind and soul, a familiar place, a place that is comfortable, that is me- quirky. what.

Cy Dune – Move the Room

ep53 Cy Dune – Move the Room

Seth Olinsky from Akron/Family has a side project called Cy Dune, and it’s a bit heavier and fuzzier. Definitely worth keeping an ear open for more stuff from Cy Dune and Akron/Family.

The Men – Electric

ep49 The Men – Electric

An album a year is note-worthy. . . a really good album every year for three years running is phenomenal. The Men have a new single out now and a new album “New Moon” coming out in March. Your only hurting yourself by avoiding them.

Slug Guts – Suckin’ Down

slugguts1
ep45 Slug Guts – Suckin’ Down

Another album to add to the best of 2012, Playin’ In Time With the Deadbeat is loaded with twangy guitar, pounding rhythm, and howling vocals. Australian band, Slug Guts, created a mood with this album; a bit dark but pleasantly warm.

Marnie Stern – Year of the Glad

Marnie+Stern+marnie
Marnie Stern – Year of the Glad

Marnie Stern’s s/t album was right at the top of my best of 2011, so I’m excited to see she’s got another album scheduled to be released in March of 2013, and for now we’ll listen to the first release off that album “Year of the Glad”

WIXIW the summer release by Liars is another nominee for album of the year. Plenty to like about this album, especially if you like turning the volume up and the lights down. The video for the song can be found here.

Suuns – Edie’s Dream

Suuns – Edie’s Dream

From Montreal, the Suuns are set to release a full length album in March of 2013. “Edie’s Dream” is a dreamy tune, and the first single released for the next album. (i think)
