Sonic Youth – Sugar Kane

ep81 Sonic Youth – Sugar Kane

Sonic Youth

So I’m once again riding the Sonic Train. I usually go about 6 to 8 months; I’ll hear a Sonic Youth song here or there and think “mmmm, so good.” But that’s it. Then out of nowhere, the urge overtakes me and it’s all I’ll listen to for a week or two straight. I’m in it. Just picked up some vinyl this week- I’ll post photos as they arrive. A nice Sonic Youth/Jay Reatard split 7″; Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star; Sister; Evol; and Dirty (which contains the song of the show).

Iggy & the Stooges – Search & Destroy

I dug all the way down into wikipedia to get this little tidbit o’ knowledge:

Bowie later recalled:

…the most absurd situation I encountered when I was recording was the first time I worked with Iggy Pop. He wanted me to mix Raw Power, so he brought the 24-track tape in, and he put it up. He had the band on one track, lead guitar on another and him on a third. Out of 24 tracks there were just three tracks that were used. He said ‘see what you can do with this’. I said, ‘Jim, there’s nothing to mix’. So we just pushed the vocal up and down a lot. On at least four or five songs that was the situation, including “Search and Destroy.” That’s got such a peculiar sound because all we did was occasionally bring the lead guitar up and take it out.”

Black Sabbath – Sweet Leaf

Bust out the black light, the lava lamp, fat hand dipped candle and your dad’s 4 foot bong! Black Sabbath is the beginning of what is considered “Heavy” in Rock and Roll.  If it’s loud, if it’s dirty, if it makes you grind your teeth and thrash your head about uncontrollably than there’s a good chance that it’s roots can be traced back to the heaviest of heavies. Here’s just a handful of songs that owe a bit of a tribute to Black Sabbath, enjoy.  Black Sabbath – Sweet Leaf ~67 minutes

Sonic Youth – Mary-Christ

Sonic Youth may be done, who knows, but at one point someone asked me if I were stranded on a desert island and could have only one artist/bands complete works to listen to who would it be. . . I guess I wouldn’t be relating that little slice of life if the band weren’t Sonic Youth so, cat’s outta the bag, my answer then was Sonic Youth and it would still be Sonic Youth today. I had a little bit of anxiety trying to pick a song, but resigned myself to the fact that if I continue doing this show I will have plenty of opportunity to do another Sonic Youth song, and another, and another.  Anyway, I picked a good number of songs that were released relatively close to when Goo was released and then a few songs that are more recent.  I rolled out the first of a 2012 release and added some songs to the best of 2011 list that will never die.  Hope you enjoy. Sonic Youth – Mary-Christ ~63 minutes
