Episode 89
The Younger Lovers is a Bay Area band that is carrying on with the tradition of being really good. The punk rock movement is alive and well in Northern California and The Younger Lovers can take a little slice of credit for that.

ep89 The Younger Lovers – Down Down Gently; The Ballad of Two Stubborn Men
In the early 1990’s, rising out of the neon concrete slab of Tokyo could be heard the acoustical assault that is Melt-Banana. Their new album “Fetch” continues the tradition; and the masses wept, some for joy, others for their impending doom.
ep86 Melt-Banana – Candy Gun; Vertigo Game
(oh, i neglected to mention their bassist, Rika Hamamoto, in the show- she is awesome, and cute)

ep82 Radioactivity – Don’t Try; World of Pleasure
Out of Austin, Radioactivity is The Marked Men’s Mark Ryan and Jeff Burke with Daniel Fried and Mark Rutherford. They blast out 13 songs in 30 minutes on their self-titled debut that keeps selling out over at Dirtnap Records. Pick it up, order it, make them work it out.
So I’m once again riding the Sonic Train. I usually go about 6 to 8 months; I’ll hear a Sonic Youth song here or there and think “mmmm, so good.” But that’s it. Then out of nowhere, the urge overtakes me and it’s all I’ll listen to for a week or two straight. I’m in it. Just picked up some vinyl this week- I’ll post photos as they arrive. A nice Sonic Youth/Jay Reatard split 7″; Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star; Sister; Evol; and Dirty (which contains the song of the show).
Bad Sports new album Bras perpetuates their persistent pursuit for punk perfection. The songs are tight. The songs are loud. The songs are fast. Kickin ass in your earhole.

ep 78 – 8 songs 1 show 3 months later
I’ve got a lengthy show for you, to make up for lost time, a bit. I wrote an article on some of the best albums of 2013 so far and I’m going to play some songs from those very albums (and perhaps some that were not mentioned). So, here’s the list:
ad
Best Albums of 2013. . . so far
Yeah, I’m a bit early for a best of list, just like seeing xmas decorations before Halloween- it’s a bit obtuse. But I got the time and I been listening to these handful of albums a lot. And besides, so what? It’s a list. I also haven’t had much time in the last couple of months to really explore what’s been released recently (I work in a field that is dependent on sunshine, so I get real busy in the summertime). I’m hoping to catch up on all the good stuff that’s been coming out this fall.
So I went over to last.fm and took a look at my scrobbles. Now this only includes the tracks that I listened to on Spotify and here is the top ten for the past 12 months:
(in that order) Starting with 350 scrobbles for Thee Oh Sees and ending with 113 for Gap Dream. Of course, the scrobbles aren’t only for the 2013 releases, it includes all their music available. Only 2 of those bands didn’t put out an album this year- OBNIII’s and Pterodactyl. And while The Mallard did put out an album this year, I really haven’t listened to it much, mostly I’ve listened to their 2012 release “Yes on Blood”. So those three bands aside, there is only one band missing that breaks my top 5 albums of 2013, so far. Pissed Jeans “Honeys” is a truly phenomenal album. So with all that said, here it is- the best albums of 2013, so far:
and I can’t believe I’m putting Thee Oh Sees at 5, I can’t put any of these at 5 really, they’re all tied for 1st, everybody wins.
Pregnant, the musical emanations of one Daniel Trudeau, released “Pottery Mill” earlier this year- Aprilish. The psychedelic, folksy experimental soundscapes appeal to my inner psycho-folksy mountain man.
ep76 The Oblivions – Run For Cover
Back to Memphis, with the Oblivians. The 90’s garage punk lo-fi band is back with a new release of grinding, thrashing goodness. Go find yourself a copy of “Desperation” today!

Speedy Ortiz is getting some love, and rightfully so. . . their album “Major Arcana” is very, very niiiice. The melodies attach themselves to your medulla oblongata and deposit gritty pebble sized guitar notes that you’ll have a difficult time srubbing clean. Be prepared to foster their grunge pop into your life for the foreseeable future, you will not be disappointed.

ep74 Low Fat Getting High – Better Better Worse
Brooklyn band Low Fat Getting High just released a new EP called “Bad Yoga” and it is good. 4 songs, all loud fast and fun. Have a listen, buy the EP, impress your friends.
Oakland punks Shannon and the Clams dropped this album earlier this year and it is a doozy! I’m loving Shannon’s vocal style-ings; and the surf garage doo-wop r&b rock outfit blasts out 15 tracks on the LP, get yours today!
Out of Washington DC comes a rollicking good time of a single from the doo-wap, bluesy, surf punks Shark Week. The single releases on July 30 so order yours today.
ep71 The Visibles – Trestled in Trees
A return to the music! The Visibles, a SF bay area band, released their self-titled debut LP this May and they open Season 4 of 1 Song 1 Show. Tucked away in the evergreens of Fairfax CA, The Visibles are a local favorite; and they have put out an impeccably produced album, hopefully one of many to come.

ep70 Lamps – An Irrational Fear of Sailors
LA punks Lamps released the LP “Under the Water Under the Ground” last year and it pounds out some pleasurable sounds. Check it out.
ep69 Thee Oh Sees – Toe Cutter Thumb Buster

ep66 The Black Angels – Don’t Play With Guns
Austin Psych outfit The Black Angels are releasing a new album on April 2nd, touring extensively at the moment and tripping out anyone with a penchant for reverb and star gazing.
ep65 Wooden Indian Burial Ground – Crows
This psychedelic/drone/fuzz/rock quartet brings the groove and the stomp, I enjoy their Portland appeal and can really bug out to em.

Thursday night at The Knockout began with a long trip down Mission, thinking about food and looking for a sweet spot to find some grub. After some seafood curry and chicken in peanut sauce up the street, we headed over to the show in time to catch G Green setting up their stuff. The Knockout is a narrow club with a long bar running up one side of it, a couple of seats and benches and a cozy stage at the end of it all. Between sets a young woman kept the groove alive spinning sweet songs one after another and 2 large video screens silently alternated between bodacious 80’s hair bands and films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligheri.
G Green, out of Sacramento, opened the show and tore into a quick set of songs driven by a limping drummer and giant bassist with a 6-foot smile- good kids…

ep62 The Intelligence – I Like LA
Long time proto-punk new wavey LA rock and rollers The Intelligence had a strong showing in 2012 with their album “Everybody’s Got It Easy But Me”. Their long discography is definitely worth a spin, put “Fake Surfers” up high on that list.

ep57 Happy Jawbone Family Band – Book of Fire
Happy Jawbone Family Band is as quirky as their name implies, and if I’ve learned anything about creative people, I’ve learned that they absolutely adore the moniker “quirky”. HJFB is not quirky, they are good. It is music that evokes and emotes. It puts me in a place distinctly within my mind and soul, a familiar place, a place that is comfortable, that is me- quirky. what.
