Bust out the black light, the lava lamp, fat hand dipped candle and your dad’s 4 foot bong! Black Sabbath is the beginning of what is considered “Heavy” in Rock and Roll. If it’s loud, if it’s dirty, if it makes you grind your teeth and thrash your head about uncontrollably than there’s a good chance that it’s roots can be traced back to the heaviest of heavies. Here’s just a handful of songs that owe a bit of a tribute to Black Sabbath, enjoy. Black Sabbath – Sweet Leaf ~67 minutes
Hey! This week’s episode is brought to you by The Pixies! Their songs were melodic and vicious, well structured and violent; they exuded emotional exuberance. I wish I had more time to choose other bands that convey a similar passion, but I feel most bands strive to achieve the type of raw expression within the boundaries of song as the Pixies were able to capture repeatedly. I went back through the file folders digging up some songs that struck me at first listen but whom I never explored further- mixed in with some new stuff and some old. There will be more Pixies, of that you can be sure. Pixies – Hey ~65 minutes
This week is a tribute to 924 Gilman St, although I don’t think The Clash ever played there. Many bands throughout the late 80’s and early 90’s cut their teeth and split their lips jumping around the all ages club, 924 Gilman St. Operation Ivy the short lived, much loved punk-ska Berkeley band was the reincarnation of The Clash. The other bands included in this episode reflect all that was good about The Clash and Operation Ivy. The Clash – Rudie Can’t Fail ~63 minutes
I have a scrapbook of David Bowie images in my head. Ziggy Stardust – the vampire in The Hunger – singing Christmas carols with Bing Crosby – the Goblin King in Labyrinth – duet with Tina Turner. Then there’s that whole Tin Machine thing. I don’t know much about the man, but I got a pretty good feeling he’s pretty much a total bad-ass. I threw a bunch o songs on this one, somewhat haphazardly, thanks to Pascal for turning me on last minute to Seventeen Evergreen. Also, I finally included Thee Oh Sees, after threatening to play them in at least 2 maybe 3 episodes previously, a San Francisco Bay Area band (Seventeen Evergreen are also locals). A handful of older songs show up in the mix, hope you like it: David Bowie – Five Years ~63 minutes
